Emerging from the groundbreaking discoveries of Nikolai Tesla and Thomas Edison, the electronics industry is one of the most important industrial sectors since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Generally, the sectors of electrical engineering and power supply are separated.
  • There is a difference between electrical engineering and the power supply industry
  • Simple components are needed for power supply. Relatively complex components required for electrical engineering.
  • Efficient storage engineering is one of the most important uses of the electronics industry.

The power supply industry is a part of the electronics industry, which deals with the production and distribution of electric energy. This includes the generator and transformer manufacturing industries, the manufacturing of conductor cables and all other components that have to do with power supply. Contrary to electrical engineering, the power supply industry is dominated by very simple components. Electric motors and generators are made up of almost identical parts made out of cast iron, punched components and copper coils. Transformers are very simple units that are actually just made up out of coils and metal packets. With the introduction of renewable energy, photovoltaics have particularly come about as a very innovative component of the power supply field.

Electrical engineering is a significantly more complex world. This overarching term can be further split up into control technology, energy storage technology, consumer electronics and application technology. The most prominent building component in electrical engineering is the integrated circuit. It requires substantial knowledge, in order to be applied to, and successfully work on, electrical appliances. The problem lies with circuits, boards and steering elements, because they cannot be empirically operated. Contrary to the visible mechanical elements of a gearbox, in a piece of lifting equipment or other arbitrary machines, comprehension of the inner processes of an electrical circuit are not possible merely through observation. This means that electrical engineering work should only be done by a specialist. The inner circuit is called the "board". This is an etched circuit board that is soldered onto condensers, resistors or LEDs. In the mass production of electrical technology, circuit board assembly machines are important. These machines are somewhat inconsistently labelled. Other machines used for the manufacturing and assembly of circuit boards are wave soldering machines, THT machines or selective systems.

One of the biggest challenges facing the whole electronics industry is the accumulation of electric waste. The professional, environmentally friendly and efficient re-use of electronic components is a booming industrial sector. The process used for the recycling of electric waste is a very dynamic sector, where there are constantly more innovative methods being developed.

The most important task of the electronics industry is the development of efficient storage technology for energy. Following the development of energy policies, the pressure is rising to find more renewable ways to produce energy. So far, solar and wind power are the only electricity generators that can provide energy. This means that the amount of energy available is quite restricted, in comparison with demand. The standby storage of electrical power is therefore one of the central points for the further development of technology in the renewable energy sector.

Around half of the German industries are connected either directly, or in a large part, with the electronics industry. The biggest manufacturers of power supply are SIEMENS and ABB. Both manufacturers offer a good selection of second-hand transformers, generators, steering technology and further components for electricity generation. Further suppliers in this market are, for example, WEIER, SCHUNTERMANN, SGB and WICKELTECHNIK LANGER. Machines for the manufacturing of electrical components are available from ERSA. The company WELISCH has an interesting selection of machines for the manufacturing of circuit boards. The company MODERNE offers a wide range of accessories for electric products.
